Our gift ideas for a farewell party

Nos idées cadeaux pour un pot de départ

Are you celebrating a farewell party soon and have no gift ideas for your colleague? Domaine du Goût lists its ideas to make sure you don’t go wrong!

But where does the farewell party come from?

The word “pot” comes from our Germanic neighbors, more precisely from Old High German of the 12th century. It expressed roundness and was quickly adopted in France to designate a utensil that could hold both food and liquids. It thus gave rise to the term "potelé," introduced in France at that time.

The term pot takes on its full meaning during the Middle Ages since it was a container filled with beer or wine, hence the expression pot-de-vin (bribe), which from that time on referred to money secretly and illegally given to corrupt.

It was only at the beginning of the 20th century, more precisely around the 1910s, that French students adopted the word to talk about an alcoholic drink and the ritual surrounding its consumption. This ritual was then extended after their studies in the workplace.

Today, a pot therefore means a drink shared among several people and, by extension, the term includes what goes with it, namely a small party at work to mark either the arrival or departure of an employee, or even a birth or a wedding. Also, to recall the "pot-de-vin," it is customary to make a collective contribution.

Must-have gift ideas

The personalized mug

With text, a photo of their cat, or a logo, there is a wide choice that lets you unleash your imagination to leave an unforgettable memory for your colleague! A mug that changes color in ten seconds when you pour coffee hotter than 60 degrees? That exists too. The perfect gift so that with every sip, a smile appears on your colleague’s face thinking of you at their new workplace.

The green plant

Because an office is always more pleasant when tastefully decorated, giving a plant to a colleague at their farewell party is a surprise that is always appreciated. And yes, what better than to give something living so your colleague can’t forget you? Indeed, this small farewell gift will help them start their new professional experience in good company. A little tip though: if your colleague doesn’t have a green thumb, a cactus is a very good alternative choice.

The wellness box

To start their new life away from the company that stressed them so much, what better than to begin perfectly relaxed? A wellness session is the perfect gift to relax and clear the mind before embarking on new adventures.
