The Paulée of Meursault ... and all the others!

La paulée de Meursault ... et toutes les autres !

The Paulée, a meal unlike any other

It’s a traditional meal where all wine and vineyard lovers come together. If you’re lucky enough to attend one, you’ll meet winemakers, grape harvesters, oenophiles, and all those passionate about our shared love! Usually, this event takes place in September, once the grape harvest is finished. It’s a way to beautifully close this important time of the year. On this occasion, everyone brings their wine, their gem, their wonderful drink with the goal of sharing it with the other guests.

Like many wine traditions, the Paulée originated in France. The most famous one is in Burgundy, and that’s no coincidence! It takes place more precisely in Meursault. This event was created in 1932.

The Paulée de Meursault closes the Three Glorious Days and is celebrated every third weekend of November. The “first glorious” and “second glorious” are unique and colorful events at Clos Vougeot and the Hospices de Beaune! Anyway, I’ll tell you more about them in a future article… patience is a virtue!

What are the other major Paulées?

Paulées have multiplied and can now be found all over the world! And that’s only natural. After all, what could be more normal and festive than gathering to share your discoveries and wonderful wines?

Besides the one in Meursault, you’ll find them in Burgundy (Marsannay, Côte Chalonnaise…), in the Loire Valley… and even in Uncle Sam’s country (San Francisco or even New York!) among the best known. But I’m sure you know others, less prestigious but just as festive and friendly: the ones you can have at home or at friends’ ?

An etymology that fits perfectly!

The Paulée comes from the patois word paule which means shovel. This echoes the last shovel of grapes poured into the press.

It’s therefore a clear sign of the end of the grape harvest.
