Which wines to drink in winter?

Quels vins boire en hiver ?

After summer, autumn and winter settle into our daily lives with cooler temperatures and heartier dishes on our plates! With all these changes, our tasting habits also evolve. Gone are the days of rosé wines; it’s time for winter wines.

Alsace Wines

When it comes to hearty winter stews, we tend to skip white wines and serve only reds, but that’s a mistake. Indeed, some full-bodied and generous whites have just as much right to be on our table. An Alsace Pinot Gris will be perfect with fish served with rice and leek fondue. If you’re already celebrating and decide to enjoy some foie gras toasts, we recommend serving a late harvest wine, which will elevate it.

Rhône Valley Wines

During this time of year, higher alcohol levels than those in summer wines are acceptable. Perfect wines for this winter are undoubtedly those from the Rhône Valley. Châteauneuf du Pape and Crozes Hermitage, rich in flavor, will ideally accompany your meats, sauced dishes, and winter vegetables.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic that needs no introduction. Typical of Médoc wines, its earthy aromas also pair very well with our winter dishes. On the menu: beef, holiday roasts, duck, and goose, accompanied by lentils or mashed potatoes. Just the thing to warm your taste buds!

Chardonnay

Also a classic, emblematic of white wines from the Burgundy region (Chablis, Pouilly-Fuissé, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet), it’s the white wine to always have on hand to brighten a long winter evening. Rich and creamy, with aromas of vanilla, butter, caramel, and a hint of citrus, it’s the ultimate comfort wine. Its bonus? It pairs with a wide range of dishes. White meats like turkey and chicken, fish like sea bass, or your favorite shellfish such as lobster, for example. But that’s not all. It also goes wonderfully with cream- or mushroom-based dishes, as well as cheeses (Comté, Gruyère). It pairs especially well with fondue, raclette, Mont d’Or, or tartiflette.

Champagne

If you’re one of those people who drink champagne all year round (like us), you’re right. Why reserve champagne only for New Year’s Eve? Light and refreshing, it’s the most versatile wine when it comes to food pairings. It goes with everything! And if you think champagne is expensive, know that not all are; some champagnes from small producers are excellent and affordable! Plus, what better way to cure the winter blues than with champagne bubbles? Fish, seafood, charcuterie, cheese... with champagne, the choice is yours.

Port

A quintessential Portuguese specialty, rich in flavor and strength, port also charms us with its silky and sweet character. The perfect companion for cozy evenings by the fireplace, to enjoy as an aperitif or dessert. It pairs perfectly with blue cheeses like Roquefort or Gorgonzola. Also with chocolate desserts, crème brûlées, or tarts. And if you’re running low on supplies to face the winter, discover the wines from our shop to warm you up!
